Early this morning, three Metropolitan Police Department officers were shot while courageously responding to a dangerous situation. I am deeply relieved to hear that they are in stable condition, and I am praying for their full and swift recovery. My heart is with these officers and their families as they face this incredibly difficult time.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to Chief Pamela Smith for her swift response and steady leadership during this crisis. Her commitment to the safety of our officers and our communities is evident in moments like this.
This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the daily risks our officers take to protect all of us. It also underscores the urgent need to continue focusing on both responding to and preventing crime across Washington, D.C. This is exactly why we must pass the SAFE Act—critical legislation that strengthens public safety measures, ensures basic security standards like functioning door locks in rental properties, and equips our officers and communities with the tools they need to prevent violence and protect lives. I want to thank Attorney General Brian Schwalb for introducing this important legislation.
As a member of the Council, I remain steadfast in my commitment to advancing public safety policies as I’ve done with my Whole Government Response to Crime Act, Safer Today Safer Tomorrow package, and my Firearm Injury Prevention Act to simultaneously advance accountability and prevention. Every resident must feel safe in their home and community. I will continue to support of our officers while working closely with our neighborhoods to build safer, stronger, and more resilient communities throughout the District.
